So….he asked the question…and I said yes! How could anyone say no to those beautiful blue eyes and…something so sparkly!!!
In all seriousness, however, over the past 2+ years, we’ve learned so much about one another and grown so close. We are best friends and teammates in life; I’d like to think these attributes will serve us quite well our journeys ahead.
So without further ado, this is how the proposal happened:
Wednesday, Feb. 15th, 5:45pm. I had just returned from a field trip business trip (I forget I’m not a teacher anymore) to Southern Pines to see where they build the lovely pumps that I work on. It was a beautiful, sunny, 60 degree February day (totally normal, right?) and I was in fantastic spirits after a fun day at work (or rather not physically at work). I came home to find the house a mess. And by mess, I mean JD somehow managed to leave every light on, fan running and faucet ever so slightly dripping. This drives me nuts – and he knows it. I texted to express my displeasure about his seeming inability to shut things off after using them and decided to go on a run to burn off some energy I had after sitting in the car all day. He asked me to wait for him to return from work so we could run together. I agreed, but decided to get in my running gear to speed things up when he got home and to prevent myself from losing motivation to go running. To pass the time, I decided to take care of some odds and ends around the house, including the near daily task of refilling the bird feeder with seed. After going into the shed to get the seed, I noticed the receiver for the outdoor speakers was on. Funny – I distinctly remembered turning that off two weeks prior. I didn’t think much of it and shut the unit off.
JD returns from work looking dapper in his business suit. He claimed to have had an important meeting that afternoon, hence the garb. Before our run he said there was something out back he needed to show me. I told him I was just out back and there was nothing back there. We go out back and he points out the nice log pile he had made in the fire pit in preparation for a bonfire on a lovely evening such as this. I agree, but remind him I want to go for a run first. He proceeds to light the fire anyway and I get flustered because all I want to do at this point is still go for our run. He then pulls out his iPhone to turn on some music, but realizes he has been thwarted by my compulsive desire to shut off everything he leaves on. Nonetheless, he unlocks the shed and hits “play”. It’s Taylor Swifts’ “Love Story” – the very song that he so lovingly tried to teach me – despite my severe musical ineptitude – on guitar last summer. It’s at this moment I realize what he’s up to. I feel the butterflies in my stomach, which quickly devolve into tears and eventual sobbing as he gets down onto one knee to ask me something he had been rehearsing for weeks without my knowing: “You have loved me at my worst, you deserve me at my best, I’d be a damn fool if I waited another day to ask you this question – will you marry me?” I think somewhere in my mess of crying, hugging, and disbelief I managed a “yes, I will”, but he asked me again afterwards if I did actually say yes.
In your head you’d think it’d play out in slow motion, but in real life, it was a total blur. After the passing of Valentine’s Day, which is always rife with romantic expectations, I did not think such a thing would happen. JD’s thinking was that now I’ll have thee wonderful days in the middle of February to be fond of: my birthday, Valentine’s Day, and our engagement.
Lucky, blessed, happy, thrilled, excited, nervous and “is this really happening?” are some of the best words to describe my (and I think it’s fair to say our) emotions at the moment. I feel like I need to pinch myself (but it’s not a dream!) when I think about the incredibly supportive, loving and kind man that is no longer my boyfriend, but rather my fiancee, and soon-to-be husband.
