Day 8: Snaefellsness Peninsula

We slept in, enjoyed a scenic breakfast in our cabin and then made our way into Stykkisholmur to check out the cute fishing village and port as well as pick up a few treats at the local bakery. We made our way counter clock-wise around the Snaefellsness Peninsula to the national park protecting the Snaefellsjokull glacier. After the West Fjords, Snaefellsness didn’t impress us to the grandness we had just left behind, but we had to remind ourselves how quickly we’ve become desensitized to ASTOUNDING beauty in this country. I think we were all a bit tired and cranky and needed a break.

We stopped at Dritvik beach, and Autumn enjoyed getting to run around on the beach. There were lava formations, an arch, a shipwreck, sea spires, and stories of fishing villages long ago; the fact that all that paled in comparison to what we had just seen should tell you something. Refreshed, we got back in the car, waved goodbye to the glacier and enjoyed watching the clouds come over the mountain top.

As we started our drive to Reykjavik, we started seeing more Rhyolite mountains to our left and yellow sand beaches to our right (most of the beaches here are rocks or black volcanic sand) and the sun made for some scenic driving. We hope to get settled in our stopover B&B in Reykjavik and maybe check out a few sights before heading back in for a final loop in the country, which will seem very touristy compared to where we’ve been yet not at all by American National Park standards.
