This morning we woke up to some drizzle, but it was gone by the time breakfast was over. Our first stop of the day was Signal Hill, a large rocky overlook that affords great views of the ocean, Cape Spear and most importantly, St. John’s harbor. Cabot tower sits atop Signal Hill, where Marconi sent the first transatlantic signal across the Atlantic Ocean. It was quite windy, but Autumn managed to nap most of the time in the baby Bjorn.
We then made our way to the Avalon shopping mall (fun times!) to get a Canadian Sim card for our cell phones.
Witless Bay is an ocean ecological preserve that is home to hundreds of thousands of pairs of puffins as well as humpback, minke and fin whales. We went out with Gatherall’s Whale and Puffin Watch and were not disappointed. We saw no less than 20 whales lunge feeding, a mother and calf pair and three breaches!
By the time we were upon the puffin colony, nobody wanted to take their eyes off the whales. The pictures don’t do the majesty of these beautiful creatures justice. There were kaykers out there amongst the whales and I was nervous for them (imagine if a whale came up right under them!!!)
We arrived at our B&B – the Bread and Cheese Inn – and talk about location! Right on the water with unbelievable views from all the rooms. What a find!
We at out at a pub place that was a little lacking in ambience, but the friendliness of the staff and FRESH cod were fabulous. We settled in for the night to watch the Olympic opening ceremonies (interesting to watch them announce Team Canada on the CBC broadcast…forgot we weren’t at home). We are looking forward to snapping some more pictures of this little waterfront paradise tomorrow morning.
